Make yourself marketable

Tomorrow morning I will address a big group of children’s ministry majors at Indiana Wesleyan University. If I open up the floor for questions (which I probably will), more than likely I will get this one, “How do I make myself marketable to an exciting, growing church?”

Here will be my answer. Get busy. Find a good church and start working your butt off. Make yourself available to do whatever the church needs. Don’t demand an up-front job. Change the trash liners, volunteer to lock up, wash the church van. Roll up your sleeves and get to work.

Your resume is much more attractive when you can brag about the ministry where you are “setting the woods on fire” (don’t really start any fires). Your resume will pop when one of your references is the Pastor who can’t hardly bear to see you go because you work so hard, you’re teachable, and people like you.
